Renaming to roda computer GmbH - roda is roda!

roda is a contractual partner of the German Bundeswehr with focus on rugged mobile and static computing systems, such as notebooks, tablets and displays. The company provides customized IT solutions for industrial and military applications in harsh environments. The company has achieved an average annual turnover of 24 million euros in the past 4 years.

The Rocky® Laptop is the most well-known trademark of the south-German located IT company roda. The Rocky® has demonstrated its ruggedness and resistance in the German-speaking market, since the middle of 90’. If you know the Rocky®, you know roda!

The name addition MilDef has existed since 2012 and resulted from a joint venture by the international MilDef Group (Germany, Sweden, UK, Taiwan). Thereby was generated the cross-selling of further interesting rugged IT products, e.g. switches and computers, in a space saving 19”/2® design system, supporting an important product range in the meantime.

The planned cost savings due to joint marketing (leaflets, web presence and exhibitions) within the group was not fulfilled, due to different cultural management philosophies. Additionally, in its own market roda kept the name roda, instead of roda MilDef. Consequently CEO Martin Bertsch decided to return to the company’s roots.

Effectively nothing will change for the customer except the name, because cross-selling of products will be retained.

roda uses the company change to add a new company addition “solid IT solutions”. This effectively communicates the extended competence of the business. Initially selling just fully rugged standard products to compete with highest demands for protection from environmental conditions, nowadays roda offers the development of entire mobile and fixed IT-systems.

Power supply: rugged 80W AC/DC-power supply AC60 – The Allrounder!

AC/DC power supply with class II

The power supply series AC60 for performances up to 80 Watt (peak) is widely used. Originally, it was developed with a Rocky® laptop in the military airlifter Airbus A400M. In the meanwhile, it is also used in variants for Rockys® with IP-65 certification, for mobile communication platforms and non-roda IT products. Special and unique features of these power supplies are protection class II (optionally I), the high efficiency >84 – 90 %, the best EMC characteristics (MIL-STD 461) and the wide frequency range up to 400Hz. It is protected from dust, vibration and water (IP-54 standard) due to a rugged and powder-coated aluminium case. With the optional equipment of not-inflammable cables, this power supply is also optimally suited for the application in aircrafts and helicopters. The connectors on AC and DC side are freely selectable.

Due to the wide input voltage range of 110 – 230 Vac and 50 – 400 Hz, output voltages of 12Vdc/50W, 16Vdc/60W, 19Vdc/70W or 24Vdc/70W (Pmax: 80W peak) can be reached.

In standard the power supplies are equipped with short circuit and transient protection, over- and low voltage protection as well as a current limitation. The operation can be effected in a wide temperature range of -40°C up to +65°C and even stored at -40°C up to +85°C. Due to the weight of ca. 0.7 kg (dimensions of 160 x 85 x 45 mm without cable), it is also suitable for mobile applications. Further information can be obtained at: newsletter(at)roda-computer.com

New products: roda Rocky RK10 and RF10 with Intel® i7 processor

The new Rocky RK10

Since October 2013, the Rocky® RK10 (15 inches) and from February 2014, the Rocky® RF10 (17 inches) are available. The Rocky® Notebooks are characterised by their unique IP-65 protection and cooling conception just reached by roda. Even at interfaces that are not covered and at removed drives, there is no risk from water or dust. In addition, dust has no chance to enter the inside! Exclusively components with extended temperature range are used for the Rocky® notebooks, the interfaces are decoupled from the mainboard. This enables the Rocky® notebooks to be used reliably at extreme ambient temperature and vibrations. roda has retained the proved and well known form factor from the last three generations, in order that for example older Rockys® which are installed in vehicles can be replaced with the new model without problems.

The actual Rocky® series 10 impresses with different display resolution variants, an Intel® Core™ i7-2610UE™, Sandy Bridge, 1.5 GHz processor, an Intel® HD Graphics 3000 graphic card, a at least 500GB 2.5“ SATA hard disk (alternatively SSD) and a RAM storage which can be upgraded to 16GB DDR 1333MHz. Furthermore, 2x USB 3.0 and 1x USB 2.0 ports and an extended temperature range up to +55ºC are standard now. The CD/DVD drive can be replaced by a second battery (8.700mAh) or a customer specified function extension with the same form factor (FlexBay). Detailed information concerning the Rocky® series 10 can be obtained at: newsletter(at)roda-computer.com.
